DIY Duct Tape and Leather Luggage Tags

It’s time for another DIY video, all about making luggage tags. If you have a generic-looking suitcase, luggage tags are a must to be able to tell yours apart from the masses, and they can also be customized into fashion accessories. Today I decided to make two versions – one out of duct tape and one out of leather,

I began with the duct tape version, which is really colorful and loud. I’ve never been able to figure out how to use this zig zag duct tape before, but finally it seemed to work as an accent pattern on this project.

You don’t have to use these bright colors – it could also work using only black duct tape or mixing other neutral colors.

I used one of the gold letters from my Business Card Banner project to label the luggage tag with a K. It’s really cute, but maybe a looks a bit childish, so the leather luggage tag is a lot more simple.

I had never worked with leather before this project, but I really like how it came out. I bought a handful of leather scraps at the recycled craft supply store last weekend specifically for this project, so now I’ll have to figure out some other things to make out of them.

I love the detail that the mint-colored thread adds to the gray leather. And since you’re poking all the holes beforehand, the sewing didn’t take very long at all.

I decided to sew a heart on the back since it was a simple shape that I could easy draw and would be easily recognizable. I think it came out so cute.

I thought about trying to punch a hole in the leather for the string, but I thought that might look messy. So instead I just looped some string through the window of the tag and tied it onto my suitcase.

And those are the DIY luggage tags! I may have to print another label with my actual address so I can use one of them next time I’m traveling. For aesthetic reasons I didn’t include them, but if you were making one of these for real, you might also want to include a phone number and email address on your tag so that you can be quickly contacted if your luggage gets separated from you.

If you want to to make these luggage tags, I put all of the materials in my new Subblime list. And be sure to check out last week’s craft project, which was 3 Ways to Reuse Recycled Business Cards. Or if you’ve already seen that, you can see all of my DIY videos in this Crafting Playlist. Thanks for reading!
