Wow, I’m so out of practice with this whole blogging thing. Hello everyone who’s been waiting for me to update this for the past two months, and everyone who may just be meeting me for the first time. Check out the new site design! Isn’t it nice? I decided I wanted my blog and portfolio all in one place, and due to popular demand, got rid of the side scrolling. I worked really hard in order to have it done for today, so leave me a comment telling me what you think!
And, before I go any further, let me just give a huge thank you to Sam Rudge, who coded this entire site and did an absolutely brilliant job. When I look at code, my eyes just kind of glaze over, so what he did in 3 days what would have taken me about a month, and wouldn’t have been nearly as functional.
A lot of you reading this are probably here because you saw the Halloween YouTube logo I designed, and read the blog post about it on YouTube.
Being the first user-designed logo, I was as surprised as you all are when I was asked to design it. In fact, I was sitting in class when I got the email and ended up telling the girl who sat next to me all about it even though she didn’t know what the heck I was talking about or that I even made videos on YouTube. So that was an interesting conversation. Of course, after the excitement, the nervousness set in. I mean, more people are probably going to see this than the rest of my work combined. I came up with a couple different concepts and was so relieved when the art director said she loved the one I sent. This was such a fun project, and I’m so thankful to YouTube for giving me the opportunity to do it.
I also made a super special Halloween video to commemorate the occasion. Well, I say that, but I really just wanted an excuse to be a hacker from the 90s. Check it out, and don’t forget to subscribe to my special guest Hank Green, if you aren’t already.
Back to talking about the new website, I’m really going to try to update this blog at least three times a week. Here are some of the segments you can expect to be seeing:
New artwork – same as how I’ve always done, I’ll be sure to post whenever I have new school or professional work that I’m allowed to share.
New videos – similar to Charlie, I’ll write a blog post whenever I post a video that has a bit of a story behind it.
Photography – I’m going to try to get back in the habit of taking photos of all the very exciting things that happen in my life. Very exciting indeed.
Blast from the past – I have a ton of old work from high school and my early college days, much of which is actually somewhat decent. When I don’t have a lot of other things to blog about, I just may dig some of that out for you.
Ask Karen - feel free to email me questions about graphic design, art school, or anything else you think I might be able to answer. Please specify whether it is alright if I answer your question publicly in this blog.
Inspirations – I made one post several months ago about some of the people who inspire me and I hope to turn that into a running series.
So, if I begin slacking off on the blog (like I did for the past 2 months), please bug me and poke me about it on Twitter until I run into the corner with my laptop and type something out to FINALLY STOP THE POKING.
Thanks for reading and checking out my work! Expect another post in the next few days!
