DIY Ice Cream Cone & Cupcake Halloween Costumes

insta_costume_1
Happy Halloween! Today I’m sharing my 2015 Halloween costume – an ice cream cone. I made this for my DIY video over on HGTV Handmade, and I also got my friend Tessa Netting to model the matching costume, which is an adorable cupcake. Keep reading to see the DIY video and more photos!

Here you can get a full look at both of the costumes. Aren’t we the cutest? These costumes are perfect for work or school because they don’t show a ton of skin, and they’re made with materials you probably already have.

Let’s start with the ice cream costume. This is the whole costume laid out, including a sprinkle tank top, a beige skirt, beige fishnet tights, beige heels, sprinkle bobby pins, a cherry purse, a bright necklace, and, not pictured because I made it later, a spoon headband.

For the top, just take any sort of white shirt, cut out sprinkles from felt, and use fabric glue to attach them. Then for the bottom, take a beige pencil skirt and draw on a triangle shape with a grid inside to be the cone.

I LOVE how this purse came out and I think it’s the perfect accessory for this costume. I made it out of duct tape, which is the perfect supply if you need a weirdly shaped, one-time-use purse.

You can see my original hairstyle in the video, where I just used bobby pins with oversized sprinkles on them in my hair, but I wasn’t totally happy with how that looked. So, I made this spoon crown by wiring mini plastic spoons to a headband and using Halloween fake spiderwebs as the “whipped cream.” I am OBSESSED with it. I wish it was a normal thing to wear cutlery in your hair every day!

Tessa’s candle crown is also a long story, and almost a craft fail. I originally wanted to make the crown out of actual candles, but it turns out you can’t use hot glue on candles because it just melts the wax…So after I tried a few other ways, I finally settled on using paper straws and gold duct tape as the “candles,” which is probably a bit safer anyway since you won’t have any drunk guys trying to light your head on fire at a Halloween party.

Moving on to the cupcake costume, everything is so colorful and cute and I love it. It consists of the same white top with sprinkles as the ice cream costume, a colorful skater skirt, some heels that I covered in actual sprinkles, the candle crown, and a necklace made out of a cupcake toy.

Is Tessa not the cutest thing you’ve ever seen in your whole life?

This one is even easier to make than the ice cream cone, because all you have to do is make the same sprinkle shirt as before and pair it with a bright-colored skirt that flares out, like this skater skirt I got for under $10 on Amazon.

Then for one final touch, I made these AMAZING sprinkle shoes. I made them by painting a pair of plain black shoes white, using an entire tube of E6000 to glue on actual sprinkles, and then spraying them with a clear sealant. They actually ended up being 2 sizes too big for Tessa, so she had to model them with tissues in the toes. She was a great sport about it!

I also painted the bottom to match the rest of the shoes. Originally I painted them red like fake Louboutin’s, but then the morning we shot the video I decided to paint over them with purple so it matched the rest of the outfit better. They ended up not drying all the way and being a bit sticky to walk in, but I think it looks fine in the photos.

And, one last photo of the shoes, which I just cannot stop looking at. I hope you guys liked these costumes, and send me a photo if you make anything similar for yourself! Remember to watch the video if you scrolled past it earlier, and also check out my other two Halloween videos on HGTV Handmade – No-Cook Halloween Treats and DIY Desk Decor. Happy Halloween!
