DIY Embroidered Mother’s Day Cards

mom
It’s almost Mother’s Day, so today on HGTV Handmade I’m showing you how to make DIY Embroidered Mother’s Day cards! This is a fun way to take a simple card design and step it up a notch to make something really thoughtful for your mom. Keep reading to watch the video and see more photos of the project!

For this project you’ll need – a blank card (you can buy packs of these or just trim down a piece of cardstock and fold it in half), a pencil, a large sewing needle, a thumbtack, an eraser, scissors, and embroidery thread.

To do this project, all you have to do is draw your design in pencil on the card. Use the thumbtack to poke holes all the way around the edge of your design, and then erase the pencil marks. Thread your needle and embroider the design onto the card, using as many different colors of thread as you like. Easy!

After you finish a basic design, you can continue poking holes and adding more detail until you’re happy with how it looks. I love the ombré heart outlines in this design!

If you’re not great at drawing, you can just do a simple heart design and fill it in with embroidery thread. You could also use this design for Valentine’s Day!

A trick to using block letters in your design is to use letter stickers as a guide. Just peel them up after poking the holes and there are no pencil lines to erase!

This is a fun project to do while watching TV – I finished most of these while marathoning Broad City.

This is also the type of project where you can make a bunch of them in one go and then pull them out whenever you need to give someone a card, and look like the most thoughtful person in the world.

And don’t feel like this is just a Mother’s Day project – you can make these as birthday cards, Christmas cards, any type of design you can imagine!
