Making Costume Glasses with Tyler Oakley

For the second video in my Halloween crafting series, I decided to show how you can make costume glasses out of movie theater 3D glasses. I enlisted the help of fellow video blogger Tyler Oakley, and together we made the glasses you can see in the video above. Check out the deleted scenes video below, and close-up photos of all of the glasses after that!

This was the first example pair of glasses I made. I wanted to make something that was stereotypically Halloween and cheesy, so of course I had to go with jack-o-lanterns. I began by covering the glasses in orange artists tape, which I then gave a coat of orange paint to make sure the color was uniform.

I also attached strips of artists tape over the lens area so that I would have a surface to glue the shapes onto.

The green stem is artists tape, and the eyes and mouth are just cardstock that I colored with a sharpie and hot glued on!

The second pair of glasses I made are the mummy moustache glasses. I first thought I could get a cool texture by wrapping string all the way around the glasses, which gave it a nice nautical feel. Then, to make them more fun, I used chain to attach a moustache I made out of gaffers tape!

The last example pair of glasses I made are the Lady Gaga glasses. These have a cat-eye shape that I cut out of museum board and glued on, giving them a subtle striped texture with an x-acto knife. I also used a thumbtack to make holes in the lens, which gave them a really interesting texture, almost like tiny jewels. Finally, I threaded copper wire through the top holes to make the crazy dramatic eyebrows.

These are the glasses that Tyler made in the video. He wrapped silver and copper wire around the glasses and then hot glued on various nuts and bolts and screws I had collected over the years. I think they came out great!

And these are the glasses I made for the video! I wanted to make a dramatic black and white design, so I used my lace tape to cover the lenses. Then I cut circles out of museum board and painted the edges white, and then made the wings out of cardstock and tape. And finally, I added a bit of bling by gluing on a few jewels.

Movie theater 3D glasses are the perfect blank canvas to make all kinds of costume glasses – the possibilites are endless! They’re also a great alternative if you don’t want to put together an entire Halloween costume. I hope you enjoyed this craft project, and please send me photos of any costume glasses you make on Twitter or Tumblr – I’d love to see.
