Pictograms These pictograms were created for my Form and Communication class taught by Franz Werner in the fall of 2008. We first sketched ten ideas for each location and then brought our favorite into Illustrator to trace and modify. I found this assignment fairly difficult to complete. When I first started brainstorming, I found it difficult to come up with ten different ideas for each location. I decided early on to only use the Helvetica man as the human figure, but I still wasn’t sure if I wanted to have a human figure at all. As I narrowed the sketches down to the final pictograms, I also struggled to keep them all consistant. The auditorium, library, and museum all had patterned backgrounds that didn’t compete with the figure in the foreground but I found it difficult to come up with ideas for the background for the Cafeteria and Health Services pictograms. I am fairly happy with how they came out anyway, but they could definitely be simplified and I don’t think they are quite as successful as the other three.
