Hank Green and Maureen Johnson PDF Book Designs

I present to you the Womb of Requirement, a Harry Potter fan fiction written by Hank Green for The Harry Potter Alliance’s Equality FTW campaign. The HPA asked me to design the PDF for this story, and now I’d like to share the design with all of you. Also keep reading for a look at the PDF of Maureen Johnson’s story A Study in Sink!

I didn’t have time to design a proper cover for this PDF, so I just tried to recreate the inside covers of the Harry Potter books as best I could. It is a tale of a teenager who turns to the Room of Requirement when she finds herself pregnant at Hogwarts, and it is just beautiful.

The inside is meant to perfectly mirror the design of the American Harry Potter books, from the font to the spacing to the little stars I traced for the corner designs.

I also mimicked the colophon of the Harry Potter books, which is set in a beautiful diamond shape. It was a bit tough since I didn’t have as much information to include as in the actual books, but I think it came out looking pretty cool anyway.

The cover for Maureen’s story A Study in Sink was designed by Paul DeGeorge of Harry and the Potters and The Harry Potter Alliance, and it perfectly summarizes exactly what this story is about. Yes, it actually does involve John and Hank Green, Benedict Cumberbatch, Doritos, inflatable submarines, and a certain website caled Tumblahr.

I wanted the type in this PDF to be a bit more crazy and fun than the traditional Garamond in Harry Potter, so I set it the sans serif font Steagal and used Bureau Eagle for the titles.

I also repeated the Doritos motif throughout the book, which adds some color and is a bit unexpected, like every other sentence in this story.

If you want to read the entirety of A Study in Sink, you can still get it from The Harry Potter Alliance for $15, and The Womb of Requirement is available for $30, which comes with an audiobook MP3 read by Hank Green and Evanna Lynch (Luna in the Harry Potter movies!). Thanks so much for reading!
