Recently I had an opportunity to work on another project with John Green – custom bookplates based on Looking for Alaska and The Fault in Our Stars. These are stickers that you can write your name on and stick into any of your books to mark them as your own. Keep reading to see more photos and learn more about the design process!
I wasn’t given a ton of direction for these stickers. Mostly, I was just given the text to go on each one, and then I had free reign of the design. But, since I’ve done so much design work for John in the past, it wasn’t a huge time suck to come up with more fun ideas to do with his books.
I based the Looking for Alaska bookplate on the design I did for the John Green box set a few years ago. I used only the imagery from Looking for Alaska, changed the highlight color to yellow, and added a “labyrinth” maze in the background.
The designs don’t quite line up with the box set, but they definitely look nice together. Maybe I should make some more specific versions for Katherines and Paper Towns too!
The TFioS bookplate was heavily based on the cover of the book, and then the background was the cloud pattern that I made for the TfioS sunglasses which I designed around the time of the movie release.
The stickers came out to 3″ x 4.5. You get 10 of each design in each order for 20 stickers overall, so that you can label all of your favorite books. The bookplates are currently available over on DFTBA, along with a ton of other nerdfightastic products including my new ampersand, interrobang, and reblog necklaces. If you want to read more about design work I’ve done for John Green, check out the TFioS Sunglasses blog post as well as the John Green Box Set blog post. Thanks so much for reading and I’ll try to be back with another update soon!
