3 Valentine’s Day DIYs Inspired by Conversation Hearts

box_2
It’s been a while since I posted on here! Today I’m back with a new DIY video for you, to start off my week on HGTV Handmade. Valentine’s Day is coming up, and one of my favorite parts of the holiday are the cute conversation hearts. They taste like chalk, but they served as great inspiration for the three projects I have to share with you today. Keep reading to check out the video and see more photos of all the projects!

A little off-topic, but have you guys seen that the hearts this year include “On Fleek”? I guess even candy is trying to stay hip with the youngins.

Anyway, our first project is these conversation heart boxes that are perfect to give a Valentine’s gift in or to just keep for yourself. I found the heart-shaped wooden boxes at the craft store for just a few dollars, and you can get similar ones online. You’ll also need paint in the colors you want to use, white paint, a paintbrush, and letter stickers.

Basically, just mix up your paint to get pastel colors that match the real candy hearts. Then paint the boxes, wait for them to dry, and add a message to the top with your letter stickers. And that’s it!

Pro-tip – use a ruler to line up your letters evenly, and lay them down gently before pressing them down, just in case you need to adjust your kerning.

I think these boxes came out so cute, and they were so easy to make. The longest part of the process was just waiting for the paint to dry!

Next up is jewelry made out from actual conversation hearts. To make any of these pieces, just pick which hearts you want to use and give them several coats of a clear sealant spray. Then either glue them onto ring or barrette bases, or glue jump rings to the back in order to make a necklace or earrings. I think they are so cute and are the perfect festive touch to any Valentine’s Day outfit.

earrings
I should have made these with clip-on earring bases so I could actually wear them. I think they’re just the cutest thing!

rings
It’s so easy to make a ton of different rings and give them to all your friends or wear a new one every day!

And finally, it’s not a Valentine’s Day video without a card DIY. I made these with conversation heart stamps I found at the craft store and I think they turned out so cute.

I didn’t have brightly colored ink pads, so I used acrylic paint instead. Since the text on the stamps is pretty small, some of them got a bit smudged, but I actually really like that it looks hand-made and imperfect.

I made the red version for the step-by-step in the video, but I actually prefer this brightly-colored version a lot more. I’d love to see what colors you pick if you decide to make one!
