HGTV Designs at VidCon 2014

So VidCon 2014 happened. I’ve taken a little while to write this post because I have so much to say and share with all of you and I wanted to make sure it was all organized. HGTV had a big presence at VidCon this year, and I did a ton of design work for them, so keep reading to learn all about it and to check out some videos I posted from the weekend!

Before I get to my design work, one of the best things to come out of VidCon this year was getting to meet David Bromstad, who was a special guest at the HGTV booth on Thursday. I’ve been watching his show since high school and he is one of my biggest design inspirations, so to get to meet him and shoot videos for HGTV Handmade was amazing. I also had the chance to shoot a quick video for my channel with him, which you can watch (and see me fangirl a little bit) right here:

But now onto the design work. One of the draws of the HGTV booth were these pins which I designed with all kinds of internet-y sayings on them. At the booth we had people come up and take some to “Bling Their Badge.” They were a huge hit and even though we printed tens of thousands, we ran out of almost all of them!

I was so happy that they let me design a DFTBA badge, which ended up being one of the most popular pins!

Here you can see all of the pins we made for VidCon. How many out of the 33 different designs did you manage to collect?

I think my favorite two pins are the #YOLOSWAG pins, which I may have designed with matching gradients so they would look good on my own badge when I paired them together ;)

I’m so happy I managed to grab one of almost each of the button designs before we ran out! Though I didn’t have to worry about getting a Facebook Like pin, since it was one of the least popular, which surprised me. I guess the kids just aren’t on Facebook anymore!

We also gave out pins on this postcard I designed for the swag bags…

…so now I can be like, Remember that time my face ended up on a postcard in every swag bag at VidCon? Yeah, me too. #casual

This is the whole design, which was a bit tough to make since there’s just so much information we wanted to share on a 4×6 postcard, but I actually really like how it came out.

We also had an ad in the programming book, which was the first thing I paged through to find as soon as I got mine.

It didn’t have quite as much info as the postcard, but I still think it came out really cute. Also fun fact: that photo of us is actually Photoshopped from three different versions of the same photo, which I merged together so we’d each have the most flattering face out of the three.

I wasn’t directly involved with this, but HGTV also bought out the lanyards for VidCon, so it was so awesome to go around and see the HGTV logo adorning everyone’s badges.

Besides my HGTV work, I also designed this ad for all of John and Hank’s channels for the programming book. It’s pretty simple and didn’t take that long to put together, but it was a bit of a challenge trying to get all of the different sized logos and channel names of different lengths to fit in a grid that felt balanced.

They were nice enough to let me credit myself at the bottom of the ad; I wonder if I got any new subscribers out of it! (probably not)

If you’re not subscribed to all of these channels, definitely go subscribe right now, because they’re all putting out really quality videos.

And finally, I was also on a panel this year all about DIY and crafting videos, along with Meg and Ann from HGTV Handmade, Bethany Mota, Lauren Fairweather, and Steve Ramsey. Check out the video if you want to see us talk about crafting for a full hour.

And then I also put up a video recap of HGTV at VidCon over on HGTV Handmade.

Overall I had such a good time at VidCon, and I still stand by my view that it’s easily the best weekend of the year. I got to meet so many of you guys and see so many of my friends from all around the world.

At every event with John and Hank, I seem to get either a photo with John or a photo with Hank, but never both. So here’s my photo with John from this year.

One more badge to add to my ever-growing conference badge collection. And in case you were wondering, I didn’t design the badges or any of the official VidCon branding this year – the poster and shirt were done by the very talented Jonny Eveson, so definitely go check out his work.

Thank you guys so much for reading, and I hope you liked checking out all of my design work! If you want to see the designs I did for VidCon last year, you can check out this blog post. And I’ll talk to you all again soon!
