Wow, it’s been a while since I updated this thing! Well today I have a new DIY video to share, which is also part of a collab with the DIY channel SeaLemon. We called it “The Rejected Craft Supply Challenge,” and the idea was that we had to send each other five of our own supplies that we had been sitting on for ages and never used, and the other person had to make a craft using at least three of them. Keep reading to check out the video and see more photos of my project!
I made the thumbnail of the video bright and colorful, but I really love how the white version of the painting came out after I spray painted it. It puts all the focus on the form of the objects, and almost feels like something you’d see in an industrial design museum.
The three objects I used of Jennifer’s were the canvas, the pink beads, and the crayons. I actually also used one of the supplies I had sent her, the foam stickers, so I think I get extra credit for that!
I had a lot of fun playing with the lighting here. Unfortunately you can still see a little bit of color under the beads and the crayons, and if I did it again, I’d spray paint everything before gluing it down.
One of my favorite parts of this is the IKEA supplies that I used. I always seem to end up with a couple extra pieces and no idea where they were supposed to go, so now they’ve been turned into art instead of symbol of failure.
I was so worried the spray paint wouldn’t look good, since it had to stick to so many different materials, from plastic to metal to cork to foam, but it ended up looking great. The foam took the most coats, so I kind of wish I had used something else there, but in the end it looked fine.
If you want to try this yourself, one of my biggest tips is to include a lot of materials that you can cut to size, like chain or straws or beading. That helps you have something to put in those last small areas after filling in everything else.
So that’s my latest DIY project! Make sure to watch the video and also check out SeaLemon’s video to see what she made with my craft supplies. And this video was on my main channel, but if you’re not subscribed to HGTV Handmade, I’m also still putting up weekly DIY videos over there, so make sure to go get caught up. Thanks for reading!
