DIY Scream Queens Embellished Earmuffs

_insta_1
I’m a little bit in love with today’s DIY project, which is really easy, but came out so cute. If you watched the show Scream Queens that just had its Season 1 finale, you know that the fashion on that show was unreal, and I especially was obsessed with Chanel #3’s earmuff collection. So, I decided to get some earmuffs for myself to embellish and have my own collection of fashion earmuffs. If they’re not quite your style, they would also make a fun gift for a teenager, or a teenager at heart. Keep reading to learn how to make them!

In the show, the reason the reason why Chanel #3 always wears earmuffs is because she claims every boy she dates goes crazy, and one threatened to cut off her ears, so she wears the earmuffs to protect them. In reality though, Chanel #3 is played by Billie Lourd, who is Carrie Fisher’s daughter, so it’s also a throwback to the infamous Leia buns.

The earmuffs are so easy to make, and you can personalize them depending on what materials you have on hand. I gathered a whole bunch of rhinestones, necklace chains, spikes, costume jewelry, and anything else that fit into my metallic and pastel color scheme.

These are probably my favorite, and they were the most simple to make. I just took two pairs of earrings that I got at H&M, removed the earring hooks, and sewed them onto the earmuffs. The earmuffs were from H&M too, so this is a project you can do with a trip to a single store and about $30. It’s also a way that you can wear cute earrings without needing to have pierced ears (which I don’t).

The rest of the earmuffs that I bought were from Amazon for about $7 each, and they’re a bit larger and fluffier, which is good for me because I actually have a pretty wide head. For the gray ones, I decided to hot glue rhinestones all over. I might have gone slightly overboard and possibly could have scaled it back a bit, but I still really like how it came out.

Then for the pink earmuffs, I sewed on a gold chain, glued on some oversize gold spikes, and sewed on the hashtags from the Kate Spade Paper Clip Set. While editing the video, I realized the spikes and chain almost made a cat head shape, so I kind of wish I had gone in that direction, but I’ll just have to get more earmuffs and make some more!

And finally, I sewed an ampersand charm to the white pair of earmuffs, because I’m me and I have to put ampersands on everything. I used the silver ampersands that I sell on DFTBA, but you could use any large necklace charm or earring you already have. I also glued on a small piece of studded suede ribbon to finish it off.

Don’t forget about the headband when you’re decorating your earmuffs! I wanted to show a bunch of different ideas, so I decorated both the headband and the earmuffs, but you could do one or the other if you want to scale it back a bit.

I really like how the lace looks on the pink one. Just be extra careful not to burn yourself when hot gluing down the edges.

I got this studded suede ribbon at a shop in the fashion district of New York, but you could of course use any ribbon that you have for a quick and stylish upgrade to plain earmuffs.

And in case you’re wondering about my “model” here, it’s actually a pair of bookends that look like a human head. I got them when I did the video with Wayfair, and I think they’re so funny! I had to put books in the middle so the earmuffs would stay on the head, so I chose my RISD yearbook which is beautiful silver color, and the bright pink book The Merciless, which I think is fitting for a Scream Queens DIY.

I’d love to know which pair that I made was your favorite or how you would decorate your own earmuffs. Send me photos on Twitter, Tumblr, or Instagram if you make your own!

Only one photo of me wearing them because the remote control for my camera broke so I had to do photos selfie style. Plus, it’s really hard to show both my face and the side of my head to show off the earmuffs! Anyway, I hope you liked this project, and the slightly different video style I went with. Thanks so much for watching, and I hope you’re having a great holiday!
