The Fault in Our Stars Sunglasses Design

The movie of The Fault in Our Stars is set to come out soon, so DFTBA came out with a TFioS Preparedness Kit, and included in that kit are these TFioS sunglasses which I designed. Keep reading for more photos and a bit about the design process!

I really love how the sunglasses came out. I designed a pattern based on the clouds book cover for the front of the glasses, and a repeating “Okay” pattern for the arms of the glasses. The Okays are actually a slightly darker blue than I was going for, but I think it still looks fine, and you can’t predict how everything is going to print when you’re working with a wierd merch item like sunglasses.

When Rosi emailed me asking if I wanted to design the sunglasses, I immediately said yes and mocked up my first idea, which is the one that ended up being used. I also made these other three options so John and Rosi would have a few to pick from, but they loved the first one which was my favorite as well. It was actually one of the easiest design projects I’ve done lately, since I got the idea right away and didn’t have to modify it much at all before sending off the print files.

I still have my mini TFioS book that I made years ago when the book first came out. The making-of video is still up if you want to see it!

One of the perks of working on this project is that they sent me the official TFioS font to work with, so now I can write anything I want and it’ll look official. (I think I’m mature enough not to make a The Butts in Our Butts cover…maybe)

I was kind of nervous how these were going to come out since I never got an actual template to put the designs on, so I was afraid the proportions would be wrong when they were printed on the sunglasses. But the printing company did a great job and I love how they came out.

Unfortunately, BobbleJohn is a little small to wear the sunglasses though.

The entire limited-edition pack comes with a backpack, pin, tissues, candy cigarettes, and postcards designed by the incredibly talented Risa Rodil. Get yours before the movie comes out on June 6!

So I hope you guys liked this behind the scenes look into the TFioS sunglasses. I’ll definitely be rocking them to The Night Before Our Stars screening I’m going to, and I’m so excited for the movie!
